Tesla to supply batteries for Daimler E-Cell EV

Boosting its activity in electric vehicles, Daimler plans to start producing an all-electric sedan for Europe this fall that uses batteries from Tesla Motors.
Daimler is expected to launch an electric version of its entry-level line called the A-Class E-Cell at the Paris Auto Show next month, according to reports.
Daimler will start manufacturing 500 units of the A-Class E-Cell this fall in Germany for the European market, according to a company representative. The company has not yet decided whether it will be offered in the U.S., she said.
Daimler's planned EV line-up includes the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive, A-Class E-Cell, and the F-Cell fuel cell vehicle.

The car will have a range of over 124 miles. Tesla will supply the lithium-ion battery and charger for the car, according to Daimler.
Tesla engineers purchased an A-Class in Europe and built an electric-version prototype, which helped speed up introduction of the E-Class, Tesla told The New York Times last month. Daimler invested in Tesla in 2009 and is a corporate partner.
Tesla's batteries will also appear in an electric version of the RAV-4 which Toyota plans to debut at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, Toyota said on Monday. It plans to have an electric vehicle for the U.S. market in 2012.
Daimler's push into electric vehicles is being accelerated by European targets to reduce CO2 emissions from vehicles. "We won't be able to meet the target of 95 grams CO2 in 2020 without electric vehicles with batteries and fuel cells," Daimler head of research Thomas Weber told Reuters.
In the U.S., Daimler plans to offer an electric version of its mini car, the ForTwo Electric Drive, for lease starting next month. Like other automakers, Daimler is primarily targeting its electric vehicles at fleet buyers because of the higher upfront cost.

AMP to develop electric SUV prototype for OEM

AMP Electric Vehicles has announced that it's developing a mainstream SUV prototype for an automaker, but it didn't say which one. The obvious guess is GM since the Cincinnati-based start-up has developed conversion processes for a handful of GM vehicles, including the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, the 2007-2009 Saturn Solstice, and Pontiac Sky. However, a GM spokesperson indicated that the company does not have any agreement with AMP.
AMP purchases cars from dealerships for customers (or customers can bring their own) and converts the vehicle to operate with an electric drivetrain. Using a custom lithium ion battery pack and two rear-mounted Remy HVH250 motors, AMP has created an electric version of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox that has a 0-60mph of eight seconds, with a top speed of 90 mph and a range of 150 miles.
The company has already received an unspecified demo vehicle from the manufacturer and has begun the conversion process to remove the internal combustion engine and convert the SUV to a fully electric vehicle. According to AMP, it expects the conversion to be completed and delivered back to the OEM within 60 days, and it's hoping that the first prototype won't be the last.
"The AMP electric drive train is based on an entirely new and unique technology--we're powering SUV's and crossovers that go faster and further than any current or upcoming peer offerings, even those based on modified light-weight sedans," said CEO Steve Burns in a news statement.

Turning everyday garbage into gasoline

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--Among a hotel ballroom full of enterprise, cloud, and mobile apps, one product stood out at Demo Fall 2010: The gas pump at the E-Fuel stand.

An upgrade from the EFuel100 Microfueler we covered in 2008, which converted sugars and discarded alcohols into ethanol fuel, the new MicroFusion Reactor can process nearly any "cellulosic waste" into ethanol. Said waste is pretty much anything that'd otherwise go into a compost bin.

CEO Thomas Quinn explained the fuel pump part of the Reactor in the video in this post, as well as a companion product, an electricity generator that harvests the heat from the chemical process.

Quinn says Reactor-produced ethanol is less than a dollar a gallon if you provide your own waste to process, or you can pay an E-Fuel service company to deliver you ready-to-react waste to make fuel from--still saving money compared to buying ethanol the usual way.
Quinn sees businesses ("like this hotel," he says) using E-Fuel systems to turn their garbage into fuel. He even sees the products in homes. The ethanol pump system, which requires the installation of a waste storage tank as well as the pump/reactor itself, is $10,000. The generator is $6,000. Quinn says there are government subsidy and incentive programs available that lower the cost to consumers and businesses.

Hyundai unveils its first EV

At a ceremony on Thursday, Korean automaker Hyundai Motors unveiled the BlueOn, its first highway-legal all-electric vehicle.
The car is an electric version of the Hyundai i10 hatchback which was showcased as an electric concept car at the2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. The BlueOn is so named because it's a version of Hyundai's Blue Drive eco-friendly lineup that you can "switch on," according to Hyundai.
The BlueOn can be driven up to 140 kilometers (about 87 miles) on a single charge, and has a maximum speed of 130 kilometers per hour (80 mph).
The car will fully recharge from a 220-volt outlet, the Korean household standard, in six hours. It will also charge up to 80 percent capacity in 25 minutes when charged from a 380-volt fast-charging station, according to Hyundai.
Power comes from a lithium-ion polymer battery made by Korean battery maker SK Energy, which also makes similar batteries for Mitsubishi Fuso's hybrid electric vehicles. Hyundai claims its battery for the BlueOn weighs 30 percent less than a standard nickel-metal hydride battery.
The BlueOn also has a few new features not seen on most EVs currently being sold. In addition to showing charging status, the car comes equipped with a telematics system that alerts the driver to the location of the nearest recharging station. In addition, it has what Hyundai refers to as a Virtual Engine Sound System (VESS), an artificial engine sound intended to let pedestrians know the BlueOn is approaching.
Present at the unveiling ceremony was Korean President Lee Myung-Bak, who took the car for a test drive with Hyundai Vice Chairman Hyun-Soon Lee.
"Consumers' interests and demand for eco-friendly cars are rising and securing such advanced technology is critical in becoming an industry leader. Hyundai is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint and satisfying market needs," Lee said in a statement.
Hyundai will have 30 BlueOn cars in place with various Korean government agencies by October for a pilot program, with plans to produce 2,500 cars for sale to the general public by 2012. The pilot program will be used to promote awareness, as well as test Korea's charging infrastructure, according to Hyundai.
The Korean automaker estimates that it spent 40 billion won ($34 million) in research and development over a one-year period to develop the BlueOn.
